Native Trees

Payne Residency Songs

To the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”

Laurel trees have leaves with oil
It helps them survive our sun and soil
The oil holds in the H2O
So the leaves won’t dry out, you know
Native trees are adapted to survive
When California gets really dry

The oak tree’s leaves are waxy and hard
The cuticle is like a waxy guard
The cuticle is a shell of wax
To protect the leaves when drought attacks
Native trees are adapted to survive
When California gets really dry

The sycamore’s roots are wide and deep
Reaching out and down about a hundred feet
The roots stretch down to find the water
When the weather gets drier and hotter
Native trees are adapted to survive
When California gets really dry

Imported trees are not like that
This isn’t their native habitat!
They may die of dehydration
Without a lot of irrigation
But native trees are adapted to survive
When California gets really dry
