With roots in soil, producing food, uh huh
With light and water and CO2 the plants make food and O2 too, uh huh

Herbivores eat plants, my friend, uh huh
They eat the leaves on every stem, uh huh
The herbivores eat plants, my friend, they’re all vegetarian, uh huh

What do all the carnivores eat, uh huh
What’s the lion’s favorite treat, uh huh
What do all the carnivores eat, any critter that’s made of meat, uh huh

Omnivores eat everything, uh huh
They’re the culinary kings, uh huh
The omnivores eat everything, fried potatoes or buffalo wings, uh huh

Who will eat them when they die, uh huh
Consume their corpses where they lie, uh huh
Who will eat them when they die, decomposers by and by, uh huh

The nutrients get broken down, uh huh
Return the bodies to the ground, uh huh
The nutrients get broken down, the food web keeps on going ‘round, uh huh

Ms. Elkayam and her students wrote this in one of our residencies to address the following academic standard:

NGSS 5-LS2-1: Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on the idea that matter that is not food (air, water, decomposed materials in soil) is changed by plants into matter that is food. Examples of systems could include organisms, ecosystems, and the Earth.]
