Sailor’s Lullaby
copyright 2003 by Tim Griffin
You’ve had a mighty fine day on the water
Sailing around on the ocean so deep
Now the sun’s down and we know that we ought to
Tie up to the dock and put babies to sleep
Fare thee well, fare thee well, for it’s time to be sleeping
So let’s have no whining or wailing
Let the high tide sing a sweet lullaby
And when morning shall come we’ll be sailing
You’ve charted the waters from here to Low Island
Where you’ll go tomorrow nobody can say
But wherever you go won’t you sail home to my land
And into my arms at the end of the day
Fare thee well, fare thee well, for it’s time to be sleeping
So let’s have no whining or wailing
Just let the high tide sing a sweet lullaby
And when morning shall come we’ll be sailing
Notes
I wrote this for the boy genius when we was two years old. We were visiting my parents on the West side of San Juan Island in the Puget Sound; BG decided his favorite thing ever was to be paddled around through the kelp beds in a double sea kayak. He sat in front and navigated while I paddled him around al day, meeting various waterfowl and harbor seals. The best was when the orcas came by and spyhopped to have a look at us. Not a bad way to get around if you're not in a hurry, but he was terribly upset when the sun started going down and we had to go back indoors.
